Texas Government Lobbyist News: Attorney General Abbott Appoints Charles Smith to Lead Child Support Division
Attorney General Greg Abbott announced on October 28th that Charles Smith has been promoted to Deputy in the Child Support Division. Charles Smith was chosen to serve as head of Child Support Division following Deputy Alicia G. Key’s recent retirement. Deputy Key served the state for 24 years, and spent nine years as director of the Child Support Division. Smith started working for the Office of the Attorney General in 1988 as a volunteer in Lubbock. He has held many different positions in the Child Support Division, including child support officer, office manager and regional administrator.
Charles Smith will be directing the 2,700 employees who all help to provide Child Support services to over 1.4 million Texas families. This last fiscal year, the Child Support Division collected $3.6 billion dollars in child support. Texas ranks number one in the United States for amount of child support collected, with this year making it the sixth at the top.
